BBQ Rub

BBQ Rub

It’s grilling season…and this BBQ Rub is perfect! It’s sassy and sweet with a kick of spice, and of course, it’s low carb, gluten free, real food!

I grew up on grilling.

Like…almost…every…night…grilling…

So, in my world, it’s always grilling season. Seriously…

My parents would pull out the grill come rain or come shine, come heat or come blizzard. They even had special “Fry Coats” for winter. They were long, warm coats that my Mom had sewn large colorful pockets on for practicality. I think one of theirs was even made out of corduroy. They were even uglier than you’re picturing and they even smelled like grilling.

They LOVED grilling!

I don’t really think it was about the food. They would stand out there for hours, just talking and catching up (and truth be told, probably avoiding us kids). Dinner was never at 5:00 or even 6:00…It was always later. Much later. Grilling was an event – a marathon worth running.

And just when you thought…

And just when you thought maybe you would be called for dinner soon, the neighbors, whom we LOVED, would pop over for a visit and dinner would happily get pushed back another hour or two.

In fact, some summer nights, dinner would be served after dark.

I didn’t care. It gave me more time to play with my friends; the streetlights weren’t on yet anyway.

One of my favorite grilling meals was when the barbecue sauce would come out. You see, the barbecue sauce covered a multitude of sins, especially when those sins included dried out, slightly-charred meat.

And it added great flavor!

Today, there are a zillion barbecue sauce options out there to choose from, but not too many are low carb. The ones I have found usually taste just a little off or contain a sweetener I want to avoid.

And if you’re honest, a barbecue sauce has to be sweet. That’s kind of the whole point. You can’t just ditch the sweetener and have a balanced sauce.

Use a BBQ Rub Instead.

Enter the solution: Use a BBQ Rub. A good BBQ Rub will give you the BBQ flavor you want, yet still allow you to control the sweetener.

You can make this BBQ Rub with any sweetener you want, but my favorite sweetener for this is Lakanto Monkfruit (This is an affiliate link. If you purchase through this link, I make a small commission, at no extra cost to you.) I had my girlfriends over one day and we all agreed that it is quite tasty and pretty close to regular sugar without the blood sugar response. It works great in this recipe!

Yes, rubs are different than sauces and no, you won’t get sticky sweet sauciness from a BBQ Rub When I really want barbecue flavor and sauciness, I actually add a little bit of my Ranch Dressing on top. It’s surprisingly good on country style spare ribs.

It’s a juicy, flavorful meal.

The kind of meal you won’t mind sharing with your neighbors.
