Cheesy Sausage and Pepperoni Deep Dish Pizza

When I was in high school, my Besties and I went to a popular pizza place and ordered the 3 topping, deep dish pizza special. When the server asked what we wanted for our toppings, we eagerly asked for cheese, cheese and more cheese! We got quite an unusual look from the server, but we sure enjoyed our meal.

Fast forward a few years and you can imagine my frustration when I first had to go gluten free. The store-bought pizzas were all thin crust, usually soggy, and had a very sparse dusting of cheese. Not quite like the pizza adventures of the past and quite frankly, not usually worth eating.

Nowadays, I make my own healthier version of pizza from REAL FOOD ingredients. It’s quick, easy, full of flavor and full of cheesy goodness. The crust does not get crispy, so you have to eat this with a fork, but that only makes it taste even cheesier!

Ingredients

Sausage Mixture:

  • 1 1/2 lbs. pork sausage
  • 12 oz. pizza sauce

Seasonings:

  • 2 t dried parsley
  • 1 t dried basil
  • 1 t dried oregano
  • 1 t garlic powder
  • 1 t onion powder
  • 1 t paprika
  • 1 t dried fennel
  • 1 1/2 t salt
  • 1 t black pepper
  • 1/2 t dried thyme
  • 1/2 t dried rosemary
  • 1/4 t red pepper flakes

Crust:

  • 1/2 c almond flour
  • 6 eggs
  • 1/2 t baking powder

Toppings:

  • 3-4 c shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 1/2 oz. mini pepperoni

Instructions

  • Preheat a regular oven to 450 degrees F or a convection oven to 400 degrees F.  Coat a 9 x 13 pan with a light coat of olive oil or coconut oil to prevent sticking.
  • Brown and crumble the pork sausage.  Drain and add the pizza sauce.  Add the seasonings and simmer until needed.
  • Lightly beat the six eggs.  Add the baking powder and almond flour and mix completely.  Pour into prepared pan.
  • Top with sausage mixture.
  • Sprinkle with cheese and mini pepperoni.
  • In a regular oven, bake for 18-20 minutes until cheese is bubbly.  If using a convection oven, bake for 14 minutes.  Remove from oven and let stand for a few minutes to firm up.

This is an outstanding recipe, Peg! I love that it has a crust! I have made a similar recipe in the past but it didn’t have a base like this recipe. My family loved it and I will be making it for our friends and family in 2019!! Thank you for sharing this!
